Tell us a bit about you and your journey…
I am originally from South Africa but my home now is and has been New Zealand for the last 14 years. I was always active from a young age participating in different sports, particularly sprinting. When I moved to New Zealand I joined the gym for the first time and mainly focused on cardio (that cardio mindset). I then joined the Les Mills gym and fell in love with their Group Fitness classes. I completed my Group Fitness Instructor courses and began teaching Body Attack (aerobics), followed by HITT workouts and Spin (RPM and Sprint). My passion for body building began in 2014 when I entered my first bikini body building competition. It was also the year I started proper weight training. I placed 3rd in the NZIFBB Pro Am show and so my body building journey began but only to be put out in 2016 with a horrible neck and shoulder injury.
This was a huge setback and a very difficult time for me. I lost all sensation in my right arm and was told it would take about a year to heal and would never return to 100% functionality again. I took some timeout to heal and once I started to regain strength in my right arm, I began to explore other areas of movement such as calisthenics and yoga and fell in love with yoga and body weight training. It was also during this year I went plant based and it was the best decision I have ever made. After regaining strength in my right arm and starting again ‘from the bottom’ with my strength and fitness, I felt ready mentally and physically to enter into another competition which I did in April this year (2018) and placed second.
I then entered into the NZ Health and Fitness Model Search in Oct this year (2018) and placed second as well. I feel I am just getting started in this sport and I am amazed at how my body is responding and how much more connected I am becoming with it. It really is incredible what our bodies are capable of doing. I am just truly grateful to have my arm strength back and be able to move and train properly again.
What is your proudest moment thus far?
My proudest moment would be placing second at the NZ Health and Fitness Model show in October 2018 as a plant based athlete from a huge line up of talented athletes.
Tell us about your morning routine
My morning routine usually starts off with either a fasted yoga or weights session followed by my plant powered Prana on super smoothie. It really is the best way to refuel and that sets me up for day energized and focused. My recipe is simple, 2 frozen bananas, ½ cup frozen blueberries, 1 serving Pranaon protein, handful of spinach leaves, ¼ whole turmeric water and blend. So good!
What’s your favourite PranaOn product?
So hard to choose but I will have to say it is the PranaOn Pure Boost Pre Workout. It not only tastes delicious but also gives me a real lift especially before I hit my afternoon training session! This is my go to!
What’s your favourite way to use it or incorporate it into your healthy lifestyle, and why?
I have it just before I hit my afternoon workout session, I usually have it prepped in my PranaOn shaker and ready to have before my session.
Tell us something interesting about yourself or a hidden talent
I have a double major Degree in Accounting and Marketing with post graduate Diploma in Management.
None that come to mind although black cats still give me the chills sometimes.
Do you prefer training in the morning or evening?
Evening but I will happily do either.
Where can we find you on a Saturday?
Teaching my Spin class in the morning followed by enjoying some plant based goodness at one of my local plant based eateries Huckleberry Organics, Wise Cicada or Little Bird Organics. Apart from that, enjoying some of New Zealand’s beautiful nature or at the beach if the weather is good!
What’s on the horizon for you?
Developing more as a speaker, writing another book and maybe opening a vegan I am planning to do the WBFF NZ show next year in Oct 2019. I may also do the NZIFBB show in April next year.
